Follow the brook from historic parkland towards the open moors

Sunnyhurst Wood follows a beautiful, steep-sided valley from the edge of Darwen towards Earnsdale Reservoir and the surrounding moorland.

Seven miles of paths weave between mature trees, bridges, ponds and Sunnyhurst Brook, with routes continuing towards Darwen Tower. First opened as a public park in 1903, the Grade II registered landscape remains one of the town’s best-loved places to walk, explore and enjoy the changing seasons.

Sunnyhurst Wood is a brilliant place for a family walk, with bridges to cross, animal sculptures to discover and plenty of spots to pause for a picnic.

Look out for bluebells in spring, colourful leaves in autumn and local wildlife around the brook and ponds. Some routes are steep, uneven or muddy, so choose a path suited to your group and bring sensible footwear.
