A landmark worth the walk

Built for the Jubilee. Remembered for the right to roam.

Darwen Tower, also known as Jubilee Tower, stands on Beacon Hill overlooking the town. It was completed in 1898 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and to celebrate local people winning the right to access the moors above Darwen.

Today, it’s a favourite walk for locals and visitors. Head up on a clear day and you’ll be rewarded with big views across the surrounding moorland and Lancashire countryside.

Walking to the Tower

There are several routes up to Darwen Tower, with popular walks starting from Sunnyhurst Wood, Bold Venture Park and Earnsdale Road. The walk is worth it, but expect hills, uneven paths and changeable weather once you’re up on the moors.
