A spectacular 300-foot Victorian chimney built in the style of an Italian bell tower and one of the most recognisable landmarks on Darwen’s skyline.
Built in 1867 for Shorrock Brothers & Co, India Mill Chimney is a powerful reminder of the cotton industry that once shaped Darwen and communities across Lancashire.
The Grade II-listed structure rises 300 feet above Bolton Road and was designed in the style of an Italian campanile, or bell tower. Its vast stone base, patterned brickwork, decorative arches and elaborate upper sections transformed a practical mill chimney into one of the town’s most impressive architectural landmarks.
India Mill was among the great cotton-spinning complexes of its time, operating tens of thousands of spindles at its peak. The chimney and surrounding mill buildings now provide a striking connection between Darwen’s industrial past and the businesses occupying the transformed site today.
