A stainless-steel Spitfire sculpture commemorating the aircraft funded by the people of Darwen during the Second World War.
Darwen Spitfire Memorial commemorates the people of the town who raised £5,707 in less than four months to help fund a fighter aircraft during the Second World War.
Named Borough of Darwen, Spitfire R7219 entered service with 92 Squadron in March 1941. Darwen is recognised as the smallest town in the country to have financed one of the famous aircraft.
The modern stainless-steel sculpture was designed and handcrafted by apprentices from local engineering firm WEC Group. It was unveiled on 10 November 2012 and now stands prominently on The Green as a tribute to the town’s community spirit, engineering heritage and wartime contribution.
