It’s been 18 months since one of Darwen’s most iconic buildings reopened its grand doors as Springbank Manor. You may know it as The Whitehall Hotel, or even as the Country Club, but whatever you call it, this Darwen manor house has a place in the hearts of much of the Darwen community, and beyond.
But not only did the hotel have a rebrand, it’s also undertaken a comprehensive renovation led by new owner, Michael Huckerby of Huckerby Hotels. We caught up with Michael to find out more about his vision for this emblem of Darwen hospitality.
Honouring the history and original identity
A self confused hotel obsessive, Michael’s mission was to preserve the period elegance of Springbank Manor, while sympathetically modernising and refining the rooms and facilities, and focusing on more community engagement.
The house is now almost 130 years old, having been built for local mill owner, John Pickup, in 1898. Rather than giving the estate a total new brand, Michael did what felt most natural and took it back to its roots, as Springbank Manor is in fact the estate’s original name.
The house was converted to a hotel in the 1960s and was known as Whitehall Country Club, and later as The Whitehall Hotel and Distillery. Most Darwen locals will have spent a special occasion, party or milestone event at the hotel, and have made fond memories behind its sandstone facade.
But those with fond memories of the hotel can rest assured that that beautiful stone facade, alongside original features such as the sweeping panelled staircase, leaded stained glass windows and 16ft chandelier, will be preserved and nurtured under Michael’s expert helm.
A blend of classic elegance and contemporary style
This isn’t the first time Michael has had the responsibility of a stunning period building; he is also the proud owner of the Grade II listed boutique hotel, The Lawrence, over in Padiham. Michael’s experience, expertise and passion for luxury hotels is evident as soon as you step inside Springbank Manor. You’re instantly greeted by a warm welcome, a beautiful blend of classic and contemporary decor, and high quality in everything from service, to food and furniture.
There’s elements from several design styles and periods, reflecting the hotel’s journey and the changing world from 1898 to now. Think elegant William Morris wallpaper and traditional roll top baths paired with the clean lines of mid century furniture and the bold colours of contemporary digital artwork. With Michael’s attention to detail, everything works in harmony and the finished result is a unique charm that exudes class, cosiness and sophistication all in one package, right here in Darwen.
Revitalised spaces for weddings and events
Springbank Manor’s popular wedding and event spaces have all been carefully renovated alongside the 15 bedrooms. Couples can pick from a variety of rooms for their big day, including the unique working distillery room, and the beautiful 1898 room – a light, airy, welcoming space for up to 150 guests with views over the mature grounds.
Bringing the community together
The wider surroundings of Springbank Manor are also of great importance to Michael and the team. A significant aspect of the hotel’s renovation is to have greater engagement with the local community. There’s regular events to enjoy throughout the year, such as themed dining experiences (including Faulty Towers and The Traitors), comedy clubs, yoga & bubbles and artisan markets, making Springbank Manor a fantastic option for a social occasion or special meal. The Parlour restaurant is open daily to visitors and guests alike, and offers an all day offer on Thursdays – two courses for just £19.
The hotel also hosts a local baby group, and invests in community projects. Springbank Manor is a real anchor of Darwen hospitality and has played a part in the social milestones throughout the lives of countless locals, and it’s great to see how Michael has invested in the future of the estate.
What’s next at Springbank Manor?
The next phase of the renovation is The Woods Wellness facility, with sauna, hot tub and cold plunge – we anticipate this being a big hit with both guests and locals… Watch this space!
