Darwen Market Square is where the town comes together. Meet friends for coffee, take a seat outside the Market Hall or pause between exploring Darwen’s market, shops and independent businesses.
The open square provides space to sit, meet and watch the town go by, with cafés and places to eat gathered around its edges. Whether it is busy with an event or simply offering somewhere to enjoy a brew in the fresh air, this is the natural meeting point at the heart of Darwen.
Standing proudly in the centre of the square, the Weaver Bird is one of Darwen’s most distinctive pieces of public art.
Created by artist Liam Hopkins of Lazerian, the copper sculpture combines the woven patterns of the town’s textile heritage with the form of a peregrine falcon, birds known to nest around India Mill.
Local stories helped shape the artwork, while its position connects two of Darwen’s best-known landmarks: India Mill behind it and Darwen Tower on the distant skyline. Look closely and you will see how its carefully woven surface celebrates the industry, landscape and community that continue to define the town.
Throughout the year, Darwen Market Square transforms into a stage, festival site and bustling community meeting place.
It hosts the main stage for Darwen Live, along with family entertainment, artisan markets, street food, Christmas celebrations and the annual Darwen Festival of Fun. From large crowds watching headline performers to children discovering street theatre and creative activities, the square provides a flexible home for events of every size.

Darwen Market Square can accommodate community celebrations, performances, markets and large-scale town-centre events.
Organisers interested in using the space should contact Blackburn with Darwen Council before confirming or promoting an event. Permission, licensing, insurance, safety planning and traffic arrangements may be required depending on the proposed activity.
